Summary

The main trends in the studies of both anionic and cationic polymerizations of vinyl and heterocyclic monomers have been discussed. Particular attention has been paid to the coexistence of ionic and covalent active centres and their participation in the polymer chain growth. The examples of polymerization, in which the change of mechanism from ionic to covalent (pseudoionic) leads to the exclusion of side reactions, such as termination, transfer or macrocyclization, have been given. The application of pseudoionic processes in the synthesis of new telechelic polymers, macromonomers, block copolymers, and polymers with functional groups in the pendant chains has also been indicated.
