Kinetics of photopolymerization of methacrylic acid

Dilatometry has been applied in the studies of kinetics of methacryiic acid (MAA) photopolymerization in aqueous medium in the presence of Na2Si2O8 as photoinitiator. Mercury lamp served as light source. The effect of photoinitiator concentration, light intensity and monomer concentration on the rate of reaction has been determined. The values of photopolymerizatiion rate constans at 278, 298, and 313 К and energy of activation o f this reaction have been calculated. Energy of activation is 17.7 kJ/mole. It has been found that polyethylene oxide) of molecular mass 20 000 used as matrix does not influence the rate of MAA photopolymerization. Measurements of macroraddcal lifetime for MAA have been carried out in unsteady state by the method of intermittent illumination — this lifetime is 3.9 s.
