Liquid crystalline characteristics of poly(ethylene adipate) modified with p-acetoxybenzoic acid

Poly(ethylene adipate) has been modified with p-acetoxybenzoic acid to prepare liquid crystalline polymer with a possibly low temperature of mesophase transition. The product of modification has been divided into two fractions: I — soluble in acetone and II — insoluble in acetone. Both fractions have been investigated by the methods of elementary analysis. IR-spectroscopy, light microscopy, X-ray analysis and DSC-method — thus, their chemical and crystalline structure have been determined. It has been found that fraction I is a thermotropic liquid-crystalline system of nematic structure existing in the temperature range from —30 to about 100°C. Fraction II is most probably poly(p-hydroxybenzoic acid).
