Liquid crystalline polyesters containing unsaturated bonds

The synthesis of liquid crystalline alkylene-aromatic polyesters containing rests of chlorofumaric and mesaconic acids as the central unit of the mesogenic group has been described. 1H-and 13C-NMR spectra of these polyesters have been characterized. It has been shown that the introduction of substituents into the central unit of the mesogenic fragment — namely into the vinylene unit — lowers the mesophase stability. This lowering is higher in the case of a methyl substituent (rest of mesaconic acid) than in the case of chlorine substituent (rest of chlorofumaric acid).
