Liquid crystalline properties of poly(ethylene succinate) modified with p-acetoxybenzoic acid
To prepare liquid crystalline polymers with a low temperature of mesophase transitions, poly(ethylene succinate) has been modified with p-acetoxybenzoic acid. From the reaction product homopolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid has been isolated and modified poly(ethylene succinate) investigated with the use of IR, DSC, X-ray and microscopic methods. It has been found that copolyester under study has liquid crystalline properties characterized by the presence of two endothermal transitions (melting and isotropization) and by birefringent structures in the range of mesophase existence. The values of temperature and heat effects of endothermal transition have been determined. Transition in the state of mesophase takes place at a temperature about 50°C.
