Mechanisms of pigment dispersing in varnish binders

Summary

The process of wetting of pigments in binder was described in the thermodynamic aspect and the possibility of an experimental evaluation of wetting was discussed. Three mechanisms of stabilization of the aqueous and of the organic-solvent-containing dispersive systems were presented, namely: formation of a doubly electric layer, steric stabilization, and depletion stabilization. Two methods of characterizing the paint components and determining the interactions among them were discussed: the classical HLB concept and the newest system of the three-dimensional solubility parameters. The particular usability of the last mentioned method in formulating solvent-containing lacquers and varnishes and in the choice of polymeric dispersants was pointed out. A brief characteristics of such dispersants was given.
