Microscopic investigation of bitumen-polymer blends
A preparative method for the reflection optical microscopy permitting an observation of the dispersion of polymer in bitumen and bitumen in polymer as well as of the effect of their interactions has been presented. The microscopic observations have shown that no one of the systems studied was a homogeneous one and that in the process of mixing with polymer, asphalt loses probably its colloidal stability and polymer is swollen by the asphalt. The effect of mutual penetration, in particular of asphalt into polymer, can be enhanced by addition of a solvent (xylene) in the process of homogenization.
