Summary

The effect of halloysite nanotubes (HNT) (Fig. 1) on the structure as well as thermal and mechanical properties of the composites based on polyamide-6 (PA 6/HNT) has been studied. The content of HNT in the composites was 2, 4 or 6 weight percent. The composites were prepared by double extrusion using a single-screw extruder. The degree of dispersion of HNT in polyamide matrix was analyzed by mapping the distribution of silicon atoms in the composites. The melt flow rate (MFR, Table 1), actual content of HNT in the composites (Table 1), strength properties in a static tensile test as well as the structure by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC, Fig. 3, Fig. 4, Table 2) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA, Fig. 5, Fig. 6, Table 3) were examined. It was found that the degree of HNT dispersion in the polymer matrix depended on their weight content and that the presence of HNT affected the process of PA 6 crystallization in the composites (Fig. 2, Table 2). It was indicated that the double extrusion resulted in a partial degradation of PA 6 macromolecules (Table 1).
