Modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) by epichlorohydrin
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been modified by epichlorohydrin in a water solution In the presence of sulfuric acid. Thus chlrohydroxypropylethers of PVA have been obtained which in turn form glycidyl ethers of PVA by the dehydrochlorination reaction in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The influence of reaction conditions on the formation of both types of PVA ethers have been studied. The optimal conditions for the maximum substitution degree in the products have been found.
