Morphology, mechanical and thermal properties of flexible polyurethane foams modified

with layered aluminosilicates

Summary

Flexible polyurethane foams containing polyglycerol were modified with sodium montmorillonite (bentonite, MMT), a mixture of bentonite and halogen-free organic phosphorus flame retardant (Fyrol PNX). Moreover, application of hybrid filler, consisting of bentonite modified with flame retardant was attempted. The microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties as well as flammability of the modified polyurethane foams were characterized. The composite foams have increased apparent density and compressive strength compared to the non-modified foam. The modification of flexible foams with the mixture of bentonite and organic phosphorus flame retardant as well as using the hybrid filler resulted in an increased glass transition temperature of the foams. Also, the thermal stability of polyurethane foams modified with montmorillonite or hybrid filler was better than that of non-modified reference foam.
