NMR studies of the structure of unsaturated polyester resins

13C-NMR spectra have been presented of a series of model unsaturated polyester resins prepared by polycondensation of maleic anhydride with various diols [1,2-propylene glycol, propoxylated bisphenol A and oligo(propylene oxide)] by various synthesis procedures (one-step or three-step polycondensation). Splittings in the signals of carbon atoms in the furnarie groups and in the ester groups were shown to be attributable to diverse compositional sequences in the polyester chains. The NMR lines were correlated with these sequences as a result of systematic changes in the composition of these polymers. The participation of individual sequences was calculated by assuming a statistical or a block distribution of diol units and compared with the experimental results. This comparison bore out the determinations and thus showed the present method of describing the structure of unsaturated polyesters chains to be effective.
