Natural rubber and selected products of its chemical modification — historical outline
Polimery 2002, No 5, 310
Selected historical facts relating to natural rubber (NR) were presented — beginning with first contact of Europeans with the product in the 16th century, through development of its practical applications in the 18th century and particularly in the 19th century (discovery of vulcanization, mastication, construction of spreading machine, open mill and calender, discovery of ebonite), to contemporary achievements in modification of NR. A detailed discussion has been given of chlorinated NRs, epoxidized NRs and certain modified NRs (e.g. isomerized or deproteinated NR), underlining their valuable useful properties aud application opportunities. Information presented in the paper allows to conclude that NR will continue to be a frequently used product in the forthcoming years.
