Network structure of ethylene-propylene rubber vulcanizates

The dependence of the interaction parameter x of ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) with toluene at 25°C on the volume fraction of rubber in swollen gel, Vr, in the form of x = 0.425 + 0.34Vr was given. lt was experimentally established that spatial networks formed in reaction of EPR with organic peroxides are not affinic. If crosslinking of EPR with peroxide takes place in the presence of monoallyl maleate, the ionic nodes in the structure of vulcanizate are formed, probably with a functionality greater than 4. An analysis of the values of elasticity constants C1 and C2 sol content and distribution of chain lengths in the network (calculated from the results of chemical relaxation measurements) leads to the conclusion that the distribution of chain lengths in the network of vulcanizates prepared with the use of monoallyl maleate as a coagent is more uniform than in the Gauss distribution. EPR vulcanizates with ionic network nodes exhibit a higher capabilily of stress dissipation, a higher tensile strength and a better adhesion to steel than pure peroxide-type vulcanizates.
