New foamed melamine plastics from melamine solutions in reactive solvents

When foamed with azodicarbonamide at150—200°C, nonaqueous 40—50% melamine in fns(hydroxymethyl)acetone as solventgave a foamed plastic (MelTP) with an apparent density of 20—140 kg•m-3 and 50—80% of closed cells. This plasticself-extinguishes, serves well up to 200°C, smokes but slightly when burnt, and resists thermal radiation up to 30 kW•m-2. Basic service properties of MelTP are given and compared with those of a few foamed plastics currently produced (Table 1).
