New phenolic resins for glasss-fibre reinforced laminates

The history and development of a new generation of phenolic resins has been presented. The chemistry of theses resins, curing agents and preparations used in the manufacture of glass-fibre reinforced laminates have been discussed. The following topics have been considered in the first place: viscosity, curing, evolution of water, exothermal effects and surface phenomena. The main properties of the laboratory and commercial-scale resins and laminates have been compared with those of traditional polyester resins and laminates. Applications of laminates based on the new phenolic resins have been outlined .
