New-structure polymers: new grafted maleimide copolymers.

Summary

A terpolymer of styrene, N-phenylmaleimide and maleic anhydride was synthesized by radical polymerization carried out in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as initiator (Scheme 1). This terpolymer, which carried maleic anhydride mers, a 1 % solution in dioxane, was made to react with an equivalent amount of epichlorohydrin (in the presence of trimethylamine used in catalytic amounts) at ~ 100 °C to yield a product having statistically ten grafted side chains per one carboxylic group (Scheme 2). The solution of the product contained neither free epichlorohydrin nor its homopolymer; the acid value was zero. Grafting was double and vicinal. The compound was inflammable and endowed with interesting rheological properties. Studies on structure and properties are in progress.
