Oriented polyethylene of a very high molecular mass – preparation of film

and its preliminary structural studies

Summary

The procedure of formation by the gel method of films from polyethylene of very high molecular mass (Mw = 3.7 x 104) dissolved in decalin has been presented. It has been shown that coherent gels are obtained from solutions of a concentration ≥ 0,5% by weight. Films have been oriented by drawing and the effect of the drawing ralic (l = 6, 14, and 26) on polymer structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction, light microscopy and differential calorimetry, has been determined. Drawn polyethylene films reveal typical fibrillar structure. At higher l-values a distinct narrowing of the distribution of normal orientations to the (110) and (200) crystallographic planes is observed. The results of investigations for samples of lower l-values (6 and 14) reveal the presence of crystallites with two different distributions of orientation.
