Photochemical and thermal transformations in collagen and influence of β-carotene on their course

Summary

The photochemical processes in films or solutions of pure collagen and collagen with addition of 0.1% of β-carotene were investigated. It was found that 366-nm wavelength irradiation causes only small changes in collagen. But 254-nm wavelength irradiation effects a rapidde naturation of collagen, its degradation and loss of associated water. Two first processes were hindered by β-carotene. It was also found that water accelerates the thermal and photochemical transformations of the collagen structure.
