Summary

Numerous reported amphiphilic compounds capable of forming, in the water-air in terphase region, monolayers, bilayers, multilayers and vesicles have been presented with particular reference to polymerizable amphiphiles with unsaturated bonds. Methods of preparing polymerized monolayers, multilayers and vesicles polymerized from inside, outside or on eitherside of the bilayer have been discussed. The Langmuir-Blodgett transfer technique formed multilayers as well as the self-assembly formed multilayers are presented. Tailor-made thin films applications in the fields of medicine (controlled drugrelease, atrombogenic surfaces), electronics (field-effect transistors, passivating layers, dielectric layers, sensors), optics (commanding surfaces, optical data storage materials), and composite materials (coupling agents) aredescribed.
