Polymerization of acrylic acid in aqueous medium in the presence

of a sodium pyrosulphite–ammonium persulphate redox system

The course of polymerization of acrylic acid in aqueous solution in argon atmosphere, initiated by the redox system comprising sodium pyrosulphite and ammonium persulphate, in which persulphate was pre sent in an amount below 7 mole-% in relation to pyrosulphite, was investigated. It was demonstrated that under such conditions low-molecular-weight poly mers were formed and the yield o f polymerization process was very high (about 99%). The results of investigations on the reaction of sodium p y ro sulphite with acrylic acid in an oxygen-free medium were presented. The calculated values of the rates of addition reaction of these substrates at 60°C were given.
