Polymerization with reversible termination – a new type of living polymerization

Polimery 1995, No 7-8, 384

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1995.384

Summary

Criteria indispensable to recognition of a polymerization process for a living polymerization were presented. They are the simultaneous fullfilment of the conditions of a linear dependence of ln[M] ([M] – monomer concentration) versus polymerization time and of Mn on conversion. From this point of view the kinetics of polymerizations with a reversible deactivation of active centres was discussed. Kinetics of cationic polymerization of tetrahydrofuran, as an example of polymerization with a rapid deactivation and a reactivation of active centres, was presented. The possibility of trans forming polymerization with termination into living polymerization by introducing nucleophiles into the system was discussed. A radical polymerization with some features of living polymerization was characterized on the example of styrene polymerization initiated by benzoyl peroxide in the presence of the stable free radical TEMPO.
