The principles of action of PDLC-type displays comprising the liquid-crystalline phase in the form of acolloidal dispersion in polymer matrix as well as requirements to be met by polymers used in the manufacture of PD LC were presented. A brief characteristics of the methods of manufacturing PD LC displays was given. These are: dispersing of liquid-crystalline phase, temperature- or concentration-induced phase separation, phase separation due to polymerization. The experimental evaluation of the suitability of poly(vinyl alcohol), polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl cyclohexanal, poly(methyl methacrylate), polyurethanes, epoxide resins and several other polymers for the manufacture of PD LC was summarized.
