DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1999.095

Summary

The history of polymer processing is reviewed and the role of the pioneers (Nobel Prize winners), the eminent Polish investigators included, in the physics and chemistry of polymers is emphasized. The objectives of polymer processing, the accompanying phenomena and the classification of processing methods are described (Fig. 2). Particular emphasis is placed on the autonomy of polymer processing as a branch of science. The cybernetic approach to polymer processing, the relations between input and output quantities (Figs. 3, 4), is discussed. The energy consumption per unit mass during the processing is reviewed (Table 1). World's and Polish literature on polymer processing is characterized and challenges posed to polymer processing by modem civilization are discussed.
Keywords: polymer materials, development of polymer processing, classification of polymer processing methods, cybernetic approach to polymer processing, unit consumption of energy
