Summary

It has been shown that membranes from poly(vinyl alcohol) modified with oxalic, maleic, fumaric or ortho-phthalic acid and then annealed at a temperature in the range of 80—120°C become water-insoluble, whereas annealing under the same conditions of poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes modified with succinic, glutaric, adipic, salicylic or malonic acid does not cause the loss of water solubility. The effect of kind and amount of modifying acid and annealing temperature on the degree of swelling, density and nature of the membrane surface has been characetrized.
