Preparation of oligomers with peroxide end-groups on the basis of 1,2-di(2,3-epoxy-1-propoxy)ethane

Summary

Title oligomers are formed in the BF3OEt2-catalyzed reaction of l,2-di(2,3-epoxy-1-propoxy)ethane (DEPE) with ethylene glycol (EG) and t-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP). To elucidate the reaction mechanism, the BF3OEt2-catalyzed reactions occurring in the model two-component DEPE—TBHP and DEPE—EG systems were followed in terms of analytical contents of the peroxide groups, epoxide groups and EG varying during the reaction. The fundamental kinetic parameters, viz., reaction rate constants and energies of activation, were calculated over 303—323 K. The major oligomer synthesis step was found to be accompanied by a side reaction, viz., BF3OEt2-catalyzed polymerization of epoxide groups. Slow introduction of DEPE to the GE + WNTB mixture containing BF3OEt2 allows to suppress the side reaction.
