Polydispersity of the emulsions prepared in the presence of salts of saturated C21—C25 carboxylic acids has been demonstrated to change substantially when the salts are formed at the interface. When styrene is conventionally emulsified in the presence of an aqueous emulsifier solution, the emulsion is composed of emulsifier micelles and monomer microdroplets. If the emulsion forms while the emulsifier is being synthesized at the interface, the emulsion is composed primarily of monomer microdroplets. Polydispersity of polystyrene suspensions was determined and polymerization of the emulsions with the emulsifier formed at the interface was fund to yield suspensions with a narrow size distribution of the polymer particles forming by a single mechanism, viz., from monomer microdroplets, only.
