Products of acrylic esters grafting on poly(vinyl chloride) as impact strength modifiers

The phase behaviour of poly(vinyl chloride) blends containing graft acrylic copolymers was studied. Crosslinking of elastomeric phase in copolymer causes phase separation. From a study of sorption of acetone vapour by PVC, PVC-graft-(MMA-co-BA) and their mixtures, the Gibbs free energy of mixing of the two investigated polymers was calculated. The values of ΔGM indicate a strong thermodynamic affinity of the mixture components. The sorption experiments show a good agreement with density determinations. The PVC/PVC-graft-(MMA-co-BA)-75 exihibits better impact strength than PVC.
