Properties of N,N,N',N'-tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diamlnodiphenylmethane
GPC and HPLC methods have been applied to the determination of composition of N,N,N',N'-tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) and the presence of more than ten percent of dimers and trimers has been detected. The physical and chemical properties (viscosity, molecular mass, epoxide value, Cl-content) have been determined and compared for the uncured TGDDM, bisphenol-A-based epoxide resin (E-15) and an epoxy-novolac resin (EN-15). The dynamic and static mechanical properties, electrical properties and thermal stability of cred TGDDM, E-15 and EN-15 have been characterized and the effect of the type of amine hardener used, temperature (up to 300°C), boiling in water and action of mineral oil at a temperature of 180°C on the above-mentioned properties investigated in detail. The results of studies on the mechanical properties and glass transition temperature of laminates based on TGDDM and carbon or glass fibre have also been presented. It has been found that the useful properties of TGDDM are much better than those of bisphenol-A-based epoxide resins. TGDDM is particularly suitable for applications under conditions of high temperature and high humidity. As compared with epoxy-novolac resins, it has a broader range of working temperatures and a much lower viscosity before curing.
