Summary

The mechanism of formation of radicals in the course of thermooxidative decomposition of phenolic Mannich bases (PMB) has been discussed. On the basis of a model oligomerization of phenyl glycidyl ether, a considerable participation of radical mechanism in the curing process of epoxide resins has been found. Radicals formed as a result of PMB-decomposition can play the role of inhibitors of the destruction processes, which adversely contribute on the character of the cross-linked structure of epoxide polymers. This phenomenon results in an enhancement of the thermal stability and chemical resistance as well as mechanical strength of epoxide resins cured with PMB in comparison with epoxide resins cred according to an anionic mechanism, e.g. under the influence of dimethylbenzylamine.
