Reactions of sulphur dioxide with 1,2-propylene oxide and 1,2-propylene sulphide

Summary

1,2-Propylene oxide undergoes alternating copolymerization with sulphur dioxide in the presence of organic Lewis bases or salts as initiators, forming poly(l,2-propylene sulphide) in high yield. Depending on the type of initiator used, the reaction can proceed with the formation of witterions or ions with anionic active centres. At 50°C, copolymerization proceeds spontaneously with the formation of poly(l,2-propylene ether sulphite). In analogous reactions, 1,2-propylene sulphide undergoes exclusively homopolymerization according to a cationic or anionic mechanism.
