Ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclopentene over the WOCl4/Al203-Si02/RnXmM system

The activity and selectivity of heterogenized catalyst WOCl4/Al2O3-SiO2/RnXmM systems (M = Al, Sn or Pb; R = alkyl; X = halogen; n = 1, 2, 3 or 4; m = 2 or 3) was studied in a model ROMP reaction of cyclopentene and found to be affected by the nature of the RnXmM compound, composition of the Al2O3-SiO2 gels, time and temperature of alkylation of tungsten topochemical (surface) complexes, and the M/W ratio. The polypentenamer yield was affected by the temperature and time of polymerization, the monomer concentration, and the cyclopentene/W ratio. The Best conditions were established for the catalyst preparation and polymerization reaction. The catalysts examined were also found to be active in the ROMP reactions of norbomene, norbomadiene and dicyclopentadiene.
