Taking into consideration the developments in designing the knife mills, a system of classification of the practically possible types of mating between straight knives has been elaborated. An analysis of types of cuts specified in this system revealed the possibility of using one of them, characterized by a hyperboloidal mating between the cutting edges of the knives, in the designing of a new type of cutter with the knife moving on a circle. A test method has been presented for establishing a relationship of the cutting fo r c e under conditions of hyperboloidal mating between knives and the geometrical characteristics and properties of material being cut. The dependence of the cutting force on the values of the hyperboloidal inclination of the knives cutting edges has been determined experimentally for the process of cutting low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and Brigid poly(vinyl chloride). The quality of the cut surfaces is the highest and the noise level is the lowest for the range of the inclination angles up to 10°.
