Selected ideas in the use of polymers for controlled drug release
The main reasons and goals have been presented of the investigations on physical and chemical polymer—drug combinations providing control of the drug release rate and site specific drug delivery. Discussion includes the basic types of physical (reservoir and monolithic systems) and chemical combinations, the kinetics of release, polymeric materials used and examples of potential and/or practical applications. Microencapsulation by interfacial polyreactions, transdermal therapeutic systems, mucoadhesive systems, osmotic pumps and some ideas concerning passive drug targeting have been briefly reviewed.
