Summary

The results of studies on degradation of natural rubber vulcanizates under influence of solvents are presented. It has been found that the degradability of vulcanizates depends on the solvent activity defined by the vulcanizate — solvent interaction parameter, as well as on the type of crosslinking agent. Thus it depends on the chemical structure and energy of the network joints. Chains and network joints of an elastomer can be homolyticaly cleaved due to strong swelling by non-polar or weakly-polar solvents, or heterolytically cleaved by piperidine in the case of poly- and di-sulfide network joints.
