Some problems of the printability of BW-5 newsprint ink form a photopolymer and a traditional forme

The start of research work on the printabllity of BW-5 newsprint ink from photopolymer formes has been justified. The advantages of the recently developed variant of the BW-5 printing ink in comparison with the hitherto used ink (a simplified composition and manufacturing process and an improvement of the printing properties) have been given. A review of literature data concerning the recently developed photopolymer formes and profits resulting from their use have been presented. The problem of printability of inks, it is the transfer of ink from the forme to the substrate, uniformity of ink spread in the case of rich prints, sharpness of line and point on prints from line and screen formes, has been discussed. Equations expressing the division of ink between forme and substrate and a densitometric method of print evaluation have been presented. In the experimental part, the measuring procedures and equipment are presented. The printability of BW-5 newsprint ink from metal and from photopolymer formes has been compared by the method of the determination of the ink distribution coefficient, relative contrast, evaluation of the uniformity of ink spread in rich prints as well as a visual evaluation. of the sharpness of print, line and. point from a line and a test forme. The results have been presented in diagrams. On the basis of these investigations it has been found that the printability of BW-5 newsprint ink both from the metal and from the Polish-made photopolymer forme is correct. The results of ink transfer are somewhat more advantageous in the case of the photopolymer forme.
