Spectroscopic and photochemical properties of some polymeric and monomeric derivatives

of p-(N, N-dimethylamino)cinnamic acid

The spectroscopic properties (electronic absorption and fluorescencje spectra) of polystyrene modified with p-(N,N-dimethylamino)cinnamic acid and those of benzyl ester of this acid as a low-molecular-weight model compound have been investigated. It has been found th a t the light sensitive polymer containing the rest of p-(N,N-dimethylamino)cinnamic acid as a light sensitive grouping is characterized by light sensitive properties typical of polycinnamates. Macromolecules of this polymer can be used as a perfect „spectroscopic probe” used in the determination of local changes in viscosity and polarity in dilute solutions of polymers. This is revealed by a hypsochromic shift of the fluorescence band maximum as well as by an increase in the halfwidth of the same band.
