State of the art in single-screw extruder plasticating systems

Summary

A review of contemporary solutions in the design of plasticating systems for extruder screws is presented. A special stress is put onto the screw elements intensifying the plasticating process and on the screw elements enhancing homogenization and uniform temperature distribution in the extruded material. The results of investigation on the influence of selected screw elements (width of slit between shearing elements and width of cuts of mixing elements) and extrusion process conditions (temperatures of the cylinder zones and speed of screw rotation) on the effectiveness of the plasticating process are also discussed. The improved solutions for screw geometrie enabling increase of the extrusion efficiency by approximately 20% without deteriorating extrudate quality are also given.
