Structure of fatigue fractures in poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Summary

The images of fatigue fractures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (Elana 2) obtained with the use of a scanning electron microscope have been presented to correlate the qualitative description of their relief with the number of cycles till fracture. There are visible on the fracture surface spots of the initiation and of the propagation of cracks as well as structural elements similar to those in metal fractures. At higher magnification, strips similar to plastic ones and due to local changes of temperature are visible.
