Studies of the manufacturing process of non-inflammable synthetic pvc-based leather for railway engineering

Summary

The effect of several types of phosphate plasticizers as well as of addition of chloroparaffin 40, urotropine-urea phosphate and antimony trioxide on the mechanical property, inflammability oxygen index, and flame spreading rate on the surface of upholstery from artificial PVC leather on polyester knitted-fabric base for passenger railway cars has been investigated. It has been found that coating the leather with a vinyl-acrylic varnish does not considerably deteriorate the above-given infammability indexes, but it improves the appearance of the leather and its resistance to soiling. The optimum formulation of raw materials for the manufacture of non-inflammable syntetic PVC leather has been established, comprising a.o. phosphate plasticizers of Reofos type, and a material has been prepared in commercial scale meeting the railway-engineering requirements according to Polish Standard PN-84/K-02500.
