Studies on acrylic polyisocyanate-crosslinked copolymers

Acrylic copolymers have been obtained from the following monomers: hydroxypropyl acrylate, 4-hydroxypropyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl methacrylate, and styrene. Copolymers have been crosslinked with hexamethylene diisocyanate. Reactivity of copolymers in relation to polyisocyanate depends on the structure of the hydroxyl-group containing monomer. The highest reactivity had hydroxypropyl methacrylate. From the studies on the hardness of coatings prepared from these copolymers it has been concluded that the content of OH-groups in copolymer should not exceed 2.6 percent, as above this value the increase in hardness is only insignificant, whereas the pot life of the binder is shortened.
