Summary

The effect of the amount of n-dodecyl mercaptan on the grafting yield of poly(ethyl acrylate) and poly(vinyl chloride) in the reaction of grafting ethyl acrylate onto PVC in a water suspension has been investigated. In the reaction products, the amount of grafted and non-grafted polymers has been determined by the methods of extraction with methanol and tetrahydrofuran and by fractional precipitation. In the range of regulator concentrations from 0.05 to 0.8 %, the degree of conversion of ethyl acrylate does not change much, whereas the yield of grafting of ethyl acrylate and PVC as well as the content of grafted copolymer in the reaction products decreases. The viscosity average molecular weight of the ethyl acrylate homopolymer decreases, too.
