Synthesis and properties of liquid butadiene-acrylonitrille rubber

The conditions of emulsion polymerization of liquid NBR rubber were determined. In these studies the effect of the butadiene: acrylonitrile ratio in the initial reaction mixture, the type of emulsifier and the content of the chain-length regulator (tertiary dodecyl mercaptan) on the viscosity and Mn of rubber was investigated. It was found that an increase of the copolymer dry-weight content in the latex formed in function of the copolymerization time is technologically advantageous also in the range of comonomer reaction degree of 80–100%. The procedure of utilization of the waste products was presented. The scheme of a pilot plant for the manufacture of two types of liquid NBR of a viscosity 7,500 and 20,000 MPa . s and containing 26% acrylonitrile was presented.
