Summary

A polymeric emulsifier Poliem A was prepared in the reaction of acrylic acid and acrylonitrile in the presence of n-octyl mercaptan used as a chainlength regulator. This process can be carried out both in a waterless medium (isopropyl alcohol) and in an alcohol-water medium. Introduction of water as a component of the solvent used in copolymerization process simplifies the procedure and makes it more environmentally compatible. The thus-prepared cooligomer is neutralized with a KOH solution and oxidized with a H2O2 solution. The effect of the concentration of chain-length regulator on the Mn-value of cooligomer and the effect of pH-value of the emulsifier on its activity in the process of synthesis of carboxylated butadiene-styrene latexes was investigated. The Best useful properties had cooligomers with Mn = 1000-2000 and pH-value 5.8-6.3.
