Synthesis of cationic polyelectrolytes.
Part III. Kinetics of polymerization of diallyldimethylammonium chloride
Diallyldimelhylaminonium chloride has been polymerized in water solution in the presence of a persulfate initiator, (NH4)2S2O8. The kinetic curves of polymerization have been determined for various concentrations of initiator and monomer and at various temperatures. The summary activation energy — 15.4 kcal/mole. A comparison of the above equation with corresponding theoretical equations for the rate of polymerization of non-conjugated dienes reveals that under the above given condoitions the polymerization of diallyldimethylammonium chloride can proceed with the formation of polymers with a partially cyclized structure and chain termination may be due to recombination of cyclized radicals.
