Synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins from eis-4-cyclohexenc-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride (tetrahydrophlhalic anhydride)

The possibility of using tetrahydrophthalic anhydride for the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins on the basis of diethylene glycol, propylene glycol and 2,2-di(4-hydroxypropoxyphenyl)propane (Dianol 33) has been studied. It has been found that substitution of phthalic anhydride with tetrahydrophthalic anhydride results in improvement of mechanical properties, shortening of drying time of the casting surface, lowering of refractive index, more than twofold decrease of water absorption as well as a considerable increase in the Martens yield temperature of cured unsaturated polyester resin intended for the applications in fancy goods industry.
