Synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins from non-conventional raw materials

A method of synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins modified with anhydride adducts of anthracene and cyclopentadiene has been developed. This modification was performed directly during the polycondensation reaction of maleic anhydride with glycol (ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol) run in an organic solvent (xylene) at temperatures of 140—150°C. A method of synthesis of acetylated derivatives of pentaerythritol was also presented. Reversed-phase gas chromatography and NMR methods were used for the quantification of pentaerythritol ethylation products. For the first time unsaturated polyesters resins were prepared from pentaerythritol diacetate as the glycol component. It was found that this process should be conducted in the presence of small amounts of o-xylene at 140—150°C with an acidic catalyst (p-toluenesulphonic acid). Physicochemical properties of the polyester resins as well as mechanical properties of the products of the resin crosslinking with a styrene solution were characterized.
