Synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins with the use of anhydrides of cyclic non-aromatic dicarboxylic acids

Summary

A eutectic mixture of anhydrides of cyclic non-aromatic dicarboxylic acids (hexahydrophthalic anhydride and three isomeric tetrahydrophthalic anhydrides) was used in the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins involving diethylene and propylene glycols and a propylene glycol-glycerin mixture. Partial substitution of maleic anhydride with these cyclic anhydrides was found to yield polyester resins which after having been crosslinked revealed considerable resistance to sunlight, particularly as regards impast strength and heat resistance.
