Systems for the measurement and stabilization of film thickness in the blown-film extrusion process

Summary

The methods for measuring the film thickness used currently in the tubular polyethylene film blowing process were discussed. The capacitance, ultrasonic and isotopic methods and block diagrams of the measuring devices were presented. Typical systems used for stabilizing the film thickness were also discussed — they were subdivided into systems for stabilizing the average film thickness and those for stabilizing the film thickness along the tube perimeter. As particular examples served: setting of the average film thickness by a system stabilizing the raw material unit consumption (mass dosing) and two types of thermal tube centering systems (with a segmented heating and with a segmented cooling system).
