The effect of compatibilizers on the properties of polyethylene/polyamide 6 blends
Binary LDPE/PA 6 blends and ternary LDPE/PA 6 /compatibilizer blends were prepared in the Brabender extruder equipped with a specialty designed homogenizing head placed before the extrusion head. Ethylene/ methyl acrylate copolymer (EMAC F-60) or polyethylene grafted with methacrylic acid [polyethylene-graft-poly(methyl acrylate)] were used as compatibilizers. Compatibility of polymers was evaluated by measuring the extrudate surface roughness (Table 2 ) and from the changes in rheological properties (viscosity, Figs. 1—3, and melt flow index, Fig. 4). Water absorption of extruded polymer compositions was also measured (Fig. 5). It was fund that properties of blends depend both on their composition and on the conditions of preparation. As a compatibilizer, grafted polyethylene was more efficient than ethylene/MAC copolymer.
