The effect of fillers on water absorption by cast urethane elastomers (CUE)
The effect of the presence and amount of a mineral filler (zeolite 4A, silica flour, arsil) on the water absorption at 20°C by CUE based on polyetherols — copolymers of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide — has been investigated. It has been demonstrated that water absorption of filled CUE increases continuously during about six months, whereas water absorption of pure CUE reaches during that time its equilibrium value. The considerable Increase in water absorption by filled CUE in the second stage of the process, particularly visible in the case of zeolite 4A, is probably due to disturbances in adhesion of filler to the CUE matrix.
